Merry Christmas in the United States

Christmas day is celebrated by almost every American in one form or another, even if the people celebrating are not Christians.

The Christmas holiday is derived from the Christian event of the birth of Jesus Christ, over 2000 years ago. The current calendar is based on this event, even though the exact date is not known.

With the US still being a predominantly Christian nation, most of the celebrations are Christian in nature and touch on the Bible and Jesus Christ. However, more and more secular events occur every year, and Christmas is celebrated by those of other religions or no religion. Overall, the Christmas season is one full of joy and happiness.

Christmas Gift-Giving

It is expected to exchange gifts between family members, close friends, and boyfriends and girlfriends who are together during Christmas. The amount of money spent on each gift is dictated by the individual wealth of each person as well as the relationship between the people. Each gift is wrapped in some sort of festive wrapping paper, although some people use newspaper to wrap their gifts in. Other adornments include bows, ribbons, and cards.

Some of the most common gifts include the following:

Gift cards. This has quickly become one of the most popular gift items of the Christmas holidays. Almost every store or retail location offers the purchase of gift cards to be used as credit towards future purchases.

Clothing items. It is a very thoughtful gift to give someone an article of clothing. Most often coats, sweaters, and socks are given because of the inherently cold temperatures of December in the United States.

DVDs. Everyone likes movies, and this gift is easy and affordable to give.

Small electronics. Another popular gift category, these items include phones, video games, and computer accessories and gadgets

Food. Typically candy items are given as gifts during this time.

Christmas Traditions

Some of the most obvious signs that Christmas has arrived include the appearance of the following things:

Christmas tree. Every person or family will have a Christmas tree. Some will purchase real trees, while others prefer artificial trees. The real trees are usually pine, spruce, or fir.

Stockings. What originated as Saint Nicolas putting gold coins into socks drying over a fireplace has evolved into the modern day Christmas stockings which hold small gifts and candy.

Santa Claus and reindeer. The official jolly harbinger of the holidays, Santa impersonators are found in every shopping location around the US.

Lights. One of the major traditions for Americans is to decorate their houses with thousands of lights. There are even large festivals just for lights.

Christmas Decorations and the Colors of Christmas

Green and red are the traditional colors of Christmas, and everything surrounding this time is colored accordingly. Some additional colors commonly seen in decorations for the holidays are silver and gold. Holiday signs, cards, wrapping paper, shirts, and almost everything else around this holiday bear these colors.

Besides the stockings and Christmas trees, there are numerous other decorations which are part of the traditions of this time. Some of the most popular ones are as follows:

Ornaments. These are small, attractive items which are hung on the Christmas tree. The most common variety is a spherical orb, but ornaments can be of animals, Santa Claus, or anything else.

Tinsel. Tinsel is a shredded silver plastic material which is draped on Christmas trees, giving it a more attractive appearance.

Garland. This is also hung on a Christmas tree, consisting of a wide band of silver or gold.

Mistletoe. This is a specific plant associated with Christmas in the United States. It is said that if one stands underneath this with another person, they are to kiss.

Wreaths. These decorations are made from the needles and branches of pine, spruce, or fir trees. They are wound in a circle and hung on the front doors of American houses.

Christian Traditions for Christmas

While Santa Claus, snowmen, reindeer, and lights are all symbolic of the holiday Christmas, there are certain things which are much more important for the Christian Americans. Since Christmas originated from the birth of Jesus Christ, this event is always celebrated by modern day American Christians during December 25. Some of the things one may see include the following:

Nativity scenes. A Nativity scene consists of either real people acting as the characters in the Christmas story or props fashioned to resemble these people. Typically, there will be a baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, and some animals.

Church events. Churches will hold special events and programs during this time in order to celebrate the holiday.

People singing Christmas songs. Most of the major Christmas songs are Christian in nature. Some of the most popular are “Silent Night” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” These songs are often sung at home, at church, or by carolers. Carolers and people who go door to door in their neighborhoods, singing select songs for people.

In addition to this, Christians will typically read passages from the Bible’s New Testament which recounts the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

No Work – No School

Some additional activities are held every December 25 in order to increase the spirit of the season. Every office is closed for at least the three days prior to Christmas. For those who have to work during this time, extra pay is given, often 1.5 times that of regular pay.

Students are all on holiday during this time, with universities giving the most generous breaks, often starting ten days before Christmas and extending around 15 days after Christmas. With all of this free time, many students travel back home to spend time with their families.
